Explore Istanbul’s Museums

Istanbul is a city where two continents meet, and its museums reflect that position. From the halls of Topkapı Palace, where Ottoman sultans ruled for nearly four hundred years, to the architecture of the Hagia Sophia, the city’s collections are unmatched.

Booking museum tickets in advance is strongly recommended. Istanbul’s major attractions draw millions of visitors a year and queues stretch for hours in high season. Skip-the-line tickets and combo passes save time and usually cost less than separate entries.

Beyond the major sites there are the Istanbul Archaeological Museums, with over a million artefacts, and the contemporary collections at Istanbul Modern. Whichever you choose, Istanbul’s museums are a walk through fifteen centuries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to print my tickets?
No. There is nothing to print and nothing to show on a screen: your ticket is handed to you in person at a meeting point close to the venue. Your confirmation email carries the address and the time.
Are museums open on Mondays?
Most Istanbul museums close one day a week, and for several that day is Monday. The opening days for each site are on its own product page; palaces and the cistern keep different schedules.
Is there a dress code for museum entry?
Museums have no dress code. Sites that are also working places of worship do: shoulders and knees covered, and hair covered for women. Scarves are usually available at the entrance.
